On this episode of Marketing News Canada, Darian Kovacs interviews Queen Priyanka, the winner of the first season of Canada’s Drag Race.

Priyanka, also known as Suknanan outside of Drag, is inspired daily by his parents and said their hard work is what motivates him to do more. Being the first generation Indo- Guyanese in his family, he is grateful for how inclusive and diverse Canada is. Before being on Drag Race, he was a TV personality for YTV. Suknanan began performing as a drag queen in 2017 under the name Priyanka Love in Toronto clubs.

Queen Priyanka has initiated a grant for any artist in Canada over the age of 19 to support their creativity. To be eligible for being presented with this grant, you must submit a video displaying your creativity to Vizzy’s website. The advice she gave is “no idea is too big, we will make it work.”

She states that there is a statistic that 60% of LGBTQIA2S+ members feel underrepresented in Canada. She believes that “ we do not see enough gay people on TV, we do not see enough Trans people on TV, we do not see enough of us being the faces of things.”

Queen Priyanka believes there are so many fun creative ways to sell people things. It can be on social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram - the ideas are endless. She stated that where many brands make mistakes in regards to partnerships is they think of it more just as a transaction rather than a collaboration.

When Molson Coors reached out to Queen Priyanka with the campaign idea for Vizzy, it stood out to her amongst other pitches. It was Canada’s first hard Stelzer with superfruits, the packaging was compelling, and the brand's message was important to her as it is all about being “visible.” When the brand reached out to her they did not say what they wanted from her, they asked what she wanted from them.

So many brands hire influencers just to promote their content. Queen Priyanka believes that the word influence is being taken out of the word influencer as many of them do not have much say about the content they post.

From this interview, it can be said that Queen Priyanka is an advocate for people being in a safe space where they can feel like they can be themselves. Often the media chooses generic people to be the spokesperson for their brands, but as the world is changing so is this idea. She is an advocate for people being VIZZYable, and that is what made her such an exciting podcast guest.
