On this episode of Marketing News Canada, Darian Kovacs interviews Tabatha Bull, she is the President and CEO at the Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business.

Tabatha is a team leader who is committed and passionate about equality. She sees the potential for growth in the Indigenous community in terms of being seen and represented in the Business world. Tabatha is an electrical engineer with nearly 20 years of experience in the electrical consulting and energy industry. She is keen to see Indigenous communities owning and partnering on energy projects.

She is a proud and established member of Nipissing First Nation with many fond memories of her childhood from Serpent River First Nation. She is the Director on Board of Wigwamen Housing Inc, the oldest and largest urban Native housing Provider, Ontario Chamber of Commerce and Young Peoples Theatre.

In the interview Tabatha expressed her desire to observe data and statistics in the Aboriginal Community. She mentioned that Aboriginal businesses are growing at a rapid rate, currently growing nine times faster than non Indigenous businesses in Canada.

Something that is currently affecting the growth of Aboriginal businesses is the COVID-19 pandemic. During this time many businesses are struggling, however some more than others. She stated that many workers live on Reserves, resulting in the fact that they often do not have access to some of the same technology and resources that they would in an office or in cities. This includes tools such as cellular service and high speed internet. Through donations and grants the Council for Aboriginal Business has been able to provide support to businesses in need.

Tabatha stated something during the Interview that some may be afraid to say. She expressed her dissatisfaction with the term “BIPOC.” She does not enjoy the idea of many races and cultures being grouped together under one umbrella term. She Believes that individuality is something to be celebrated and acknowledged as there are too many cultures in the world to be placed into one acronym.

Her desire and passion to be involved in the Indigenous business community stems from the idea that “they can say nothing about us, without us.” Tabatha believes that although with good intentions, people often attempt to make a difference in Indigenous communities without knowing what it is truly like to be Indigenous. That is why it is very important to her to be involved in the development of programs as she believes if you want to develop a program for Indigenous people, you need their input.

Tabatha is a committed and dedicated activist. She seeks change and ensures that people feel appreciated and involved in their communities. These qualities make her a valuable asset to the team at Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business
