On this episode of Marketing News Canada, Darian Kovacs interviews Libby Begg, David Brown, and Chris Powell from The Message.

David Brown is one of the Co Founders of The Message and currently lives in Toronto. He previously worked for Marketing Magazine and this is where he credits a lot of his knowledge and skills from.

Libby Begg is a Publisher and Partner at The Message. She is passionate about media, marketing and advertising and amongst other things. She began working at The Message just three months before the pandemic began and hopes to be working there for a long time.

Chris Powell is the writer and editor for The Message. He is an award winning freelance writer based out of Toronto. He has a speciality in writing about content consisting of marketing and media, but he is also knowledgeable in business, retail, sports and pop-culture.

The Message was designed to be a new voice for a new age of Canadian marketing. As marketing trends and traditions change the way they are discussed also needs to be adapted. It is a subscription based publication to create revenue for the brand. Unlike other subscription based publications, The Message refers to their subscribers as “friends.”

When considering their competitive analysis they priced their subscription fee in a way that they are more desirable than their competitors but still allows room for growth. They currently have only two writers, however they do have the intention of growing their business and expanding their employee base. They believe having more employees will allow for more information, since marketing is such a diverse and complex field. They have set a goal for the year of 3000 paid subscribers, or “friends.”

When it comes to the trend of marketing award shows, David believes some changes need to be made. He believes that awards are given to work that “is designed for award shows” and often not work that is deserving of an award. Some of the greatest publications are not recognized, states David.

At The Message they are mindful that they do not cover all traditional aspects of marketing such as Television advertisements, this is because they believe that marketing encompases more than just advertising to people. To them marketing is an umbrella term that contains aspects such as customer experience, advertising, public relations, media and more.

David, Libby, and Chris work cohesively together to produce creative, inspirational and outside of the box content for The Message. With each having different backgrounds in marketing, they are able to combine their knowledge and skills to produce an engaging publication. Subscribe to become one of their “friends” today.
