On this episode of Marketing News Canada, Ted Lau interviews Steve Olsher, the Founder/Editor-In-Chief at Podcast Magazine.

From the time Steve was young, he has self-identified as an entrepreneur. Since a young age, he has been working, doing whatever he can to make money, whether it be “raking leaves or rubbing dimes together to make a quarter". He is passionate about music and spent some time being a DJ, which led to him opening a nightclub. Steve attributes his constant stream of work to being “bored,” as he hates not having multiple projects on the go.

The audience for Podcast Magazine is everyone. Originally it was designed to be for podcast fans, but it ended up being an informative read for everyone. Steve says about half the audience enjoys picking up a hard copy of the magazine, where the other half prefers to enjoy it digitally.

Something interesting he noted about podcast hosts is that no host is better than the other. It is more about what that target audience is looking for. He believes that podcast listeners become invested in the hosts of podcasts they listen to often. Listeners want to know more about their daily lives and often follow them on other social channels.

A memorable interview for Steve was the Lucci Quadruplets. They had everything you would expect a Beverly Hills upper-class resident to have. Behind closed doors, however, they did not have a great life and there was abuse amongst other family issues. Steve explained this interview to be eye-opening and life-changing. He attributes it to him now understanding that money does not buy happiness.

Steve discussed how to run many entrepreneurial projects at once. He states that “the most important thing is to be very clear on what you excel at.” To stay motivated, only take on projects you actually care about. Steve says if he sees something on his calendar he does not want to do, he will simply cross it out and not do it.
