On this episode of Marketing News Canada, Ted Lau interviews Tamara Grominsky, the Chief Strategy Officer at Unbounce.
Tamara builds product marketing and growth teams that drive go-to market strategy and revenue acceleration at SMB and SaaS companies. She believes that product marketing is the linchpin to sustainable business growth and, sadly, a function that is often misunderstood and under-utilized.
When Tamara was younger she was a curious girl who loved to read and was passionate about stories. At a young age she did not know what she wanted to do when she was older, but she knew it would involve storytelling. She did her undergraduate degree in professional writing.
“To me the number one skill a product marketer should have is curiosity,” states Tamara. Every marketing strategy varies by product or service, but they will always need to be curious. Curiosity drives creativity, which sells products. Tamara believes that many people think marketing is just selling products, but they do not understand that a marketer's job is to know and understand the target market.
Tamara believes that artificial intelligence is going to empower and help marketers where some people believe it could make them obsolete. She said that the marketing AI software they have often produces better content than human intelligence does.
When she applied to work at Unbounce, it was for a role she had no interest in. She walked in knowing she had the intention to ask to be placed somewhere else in the company. She knew she was passionate about strategy and it is where some of her best skills are.
Her role was a natural evaluation, she originally began with just the product marketing team, then shifted into brand strategy. Her focus in her department is building up strong leadership. With this being said, she had strong leaders for all three of her teams; partnerships, customer marketing and product marketing. These leaders are fully empowered to lead day to day strategy, however bigger strategy decisions are made by the whole team.
When asked a round of rapid fire questions, Tamara answered as follows:
Favourite marketing book? Obviously Awesome
Favourite thing you did during lockdown? Wrote a marketing course.
A marketing trend you see gaining popularity? Artificial intelligence
Tamara is a diverse marketer with years of experience and education. Her contributions greatly assist the team at Unbounce.
