On this episode of Marketing News Canada, Daryl Louie interviews Ramli John, Managing Director at Product-Led.
Ramli started his career in web development. He assisted in developing software that many still use today, especially banks. He is very passionate about Marketing and specifically in Canada. He believes that there is no attention brought to marketing in Canada and the great things happening behind the scenes.
After doing programming in the ’70s for the banking software, Ramli decided to start his own company. “My mentality was, build it and they will come,” says Ramil. This of course did not hold true, with both him and his partner experiencing a difficult time acquiring users.
Ramli believes in the idea of learning in public. An example of this is learning to be a better writer. By sharing your work and content on platforms such as Twitter, writers can receive feedback and see the work their peers are doing. Writers can also share what worked and what didn't throughout their journey.
Growth Marketing is a podcast that Ramli started to learn from marketers. He interviews professionals in the industry to gain some insights. He enjoys learning topics such as:
Link building
TikTok
Social media marketing
Digital ads
Onboarding has shifted because there is more of a sales approach. There is often a lot of friction, explains Ramli because many people do not find the sales approach appealing. An effective way to onboard through phone calls is explaining all the highlights of the position, and explaining what a “typical” day would look like in that position, but only the glamorous parts are shared, explains Ramli.
Ramli believes that every strong marketer has a growth mindset. This means being open to feedback and willing to take constructive criticism. A strong growth mindset also involves the ability to work with others and under pressure.
Most of Ramli’s growth has come from failures that taught him the correct ways to do things, he states that a strong marketer will grow from their failures. Over the years there have been projects that did not go as planned, however, he was still able to acquire new skills from them.
Ramli is aware and passionate about different areas of marketing which makes him a great podcast host and Managing Director at Product-Led.
