On this episode of Marketing News Canada, Ted Lau interviews Matthew Price, the General Manager of Uber Canada.

Matthew is the General Manager of Uber Canada. He is responsible for leading ridesharing in one of Uber’s biggest global markets, with millions of users across 20 cities. Matthew joined Uber in 2015. Before his current role, he was head of Strategy and Planning for Uber in the UK, Northern and Eastern Europe. Matthew frequently appears in the press, on podcasts and as a keynote speaker.

Uber struggled during the pandemic, as did every business. However, as businesses are seeing higher traffic again, and people are returning to their normal ways of life, demand for drivers is increasing. Matthew said, “something to consider about working for Uber is that you are an independent contractor. You decide when and how many hours you work, which is different from most other jobs.”

UberEats gained significant popularity over the pandemic. For many restaurants, it was the reason they were able to stay in business. Without the increase of people ordering their food to go, there was a high possibility that they would have gone bankrupt.

UberGreen is a new and upcoming project that promotes sustainability. Sustainability is something greatly important to Matthew, he considers this one of the highlights of Covid being the decrease of emissions in the atmosphere. UberGreen is a one-dollar up-charge that allows riders to take either an electric or hybrid vehicle.

Matthew was born into a Canadian British family, this made him a curious individual that wanted to know more about the world. He considers himself an academic. He has visited over 60 countries and studied on a variety of different continents. Growing up, people often referred to him as wise beyond his years.

Advice Matthew would like to share with his audience is, avoid labels. Along with labels often comes pressure. When in school he was very concerned about finding a prestigious job after his education. However, he realized that this did not matter, and with hard work, the right position will find him.

A start-up business is not right for everyone. For many, it may be too high stress and too much pressure, and for these people, there are better alternatives. Start-ups require a lot of hard work and dedication, and most importantly patience.

Matthew is well-rounded in his education. He has travel experience and has worked in a variety of different global markets. These qualities that make him a well-rounded individual are what make him the ideal General Manager of Uber Canada.
