On this episode of Marketing News Canada, Ted Lau interviews Martin Waxman, Digital and Social Media Strategist.
Martin Waxman, MCM, APR, is a digital communications strategist, leads social media workshops, and conducts AI research. He’s a LinkedIn Learning instructor, co-founder of two agencies, and president of a consultancy. He’s also a past president of CPRS Toronto, a past-chair of PRSA Counselors Academy, and a member of the #AIinPR panel. Martin teaches digital strategy and social media at the Schulich School of Business, McMaster University, UToronto SCS, and Seneca College and regularly speaks at conferences and events across North America. Martin is the 2019 recipient of the Institute for Public Relations Makovsky Best Master’s Thesis Award and the 2020 recipient of the CPRS Outstanding Achievement in PR Award. He has a Master of Communications Management from McMaster-Syracuse Universities.
A common mistake people make when it comes to LinkedIn says Martin is the appearance of their profile. He says many students have profile photos that are unprofessional such as them at the beach. Martin says the best photos for LinkedIn are straight on and of good quality. Another mistake made is the cover photo. It should not be a stock photo off the internet, it should be a photo you have taken that reflects your personality.
Martin said, “my LinkedIn cover photo took me about two hours to do. It is a photo of my bookshelf that reflects all the books I like and all the books employers like their employees to read.” There is an array of books in this photo to comedy, health and wellness and fiction.
When writing a LinkedIn biography, Martin believes the first person is the best. He said it is more personal and it is your opportunity to tell your story. It should include your education and skill set, but also notes about who you are as a person, such as something you like to do in your free time or a hobby.
Connecting with someone new on LinkedIn is a great way to make a good first impression. After you connect you should consider sending a message, something regarding where you know each other from. This will ensure that your new connection will remember you and will consider you for future opportunities.
On your LinkedIn page, it is important to write articles about topics you are passionate about. Not only will this demonstrate your writing skills, but it will also give your audience an idea of what you care about. This will also allow you to make more connections that share similar values with you.
Building relationships is the purpose of LinkedIn. If used correctly, it is such a powerful social media tool. Not only can it further your career, but it can also connect you with users that have similar interests to yours. Martin is very passionate about using LinkedIn to the best of his abilities, and that is why is such a great person to teach students the ins and outs of the platform.
