On this episode of Marketing News Canada, Ted Lau interviews Mark Petch, an entrepreneur.
Mark likes to refer to himself as a natural marketer. He grew up in a small town where he states there were no real business people other than his grandfather. His best friend was the most successful business person he knew, and he worked in sales. Mark began to work in the same field as his best friend but he did not love his work. So, with this being said, he moved out of his small town, received his education and now is a successful entrepreneur.
When looking to invest in companies, Mark ensures his lawyer is always involved to make sure he is making the best decisions possible. Other things he keeps in mind is the type of impact these businesses have, including:
Social impact
Massive market impact
National reach
International reach
He believes agencies should take time to do discounted or free work for small start up businesses instead of focusing their time and effort on large ones. Many agencies focus their time and effort on large ones in hopes to obtain their permanent business instead of helping the ones that need it more.
One of the most important things Mark says is having a strong division between work and home life. Since beginning working with his wife he said they have strict schedules that when they are not working they do not discuss work. They also have dedicated date nights and days with the children where work is also not a topic of discussion. He considers himself lucky to be working with his best friend.
Mark sees the importance in investing in start-up businesses. He says since they are small, the monetary loss is not as significant if the business does not succeed. He said “it is a great way to get your foot in the door of investing if it is a concept you are unfamiliar with.”
From finding his love for marketing at an early age, Mark has ventured to every side of marketing. This includes sales, investing, and entrepreneurship. His partnership with his wife is amazing because not only do they have two children together, they have a business together. Mark sees the importance of having a work life balance, and attributes his success to this balance.
