On this episode of Marketing News Canada, Ted Lau interviews Garrett Hall, a professor of digital marketing at Sheridan College.

Garrett is a business and marketing professional with a background in running all aspects of business. He has expertise in traditional and digital marketing as well as eCommerce. His love for marketing is something he strives to share with others, that is why he decided to become a professor.

Something that is interesting to Garrett is the idea of cause and effect regarding human behaviour. That is what inspired him to study marketing. After working in the field of marketing for many years he did lose his passion for working, however not for marketing. He grew tired of having employees and became bored of the typical work environment. This boredom is what inspired him to become involved in the world of academia. This way he can still be involved in marketing and share his passion without working in the typical work environment.

The biggest trend Garrett has noticed recently is the lack of in-person experiences. He stated that most things can be done online are they are online due to the convenience factor. “There is no research on this, but COVID has put us nearly 10 years in the future, it has moved everything into hyperspace,” says Garrett.

When it comes to entrepreneurship, Garrett says it's important to record everything. This way you can make a note of what works, and what does not. This information will be useful for all your future business ventures you may decide to pursue. Not only will this information help you in the future, it may help other people. Garrett recorded all this information and now shares it with his students.

Garrett believes the current generation is more self aware. He states that they know their flaws and strengths, and this is what makes them easy students to teach. They understand where they need to put in more work, however they capitalize on their strengths.

“Students today have an extension of their brain, it is called the internet,” says Garrett. He believes that to an extent, students do not need to remember information like they used to. They have access to so many amazing tools and resources that make learning much more simple.

Garrett is inspired to be learning more to share information with his students. His years of experience in the marketing field has made him the ideal person to be a professor. He shares his passion and ideas with every student he meets.
