On this episode of Marketing News Canada, Darian Kovacs interviews John Stackhouse, Senior Vice-President, Office of the CEO, Royal Bank of Canada.

John is a graduate from the University of Queens. Darian first noticed his work on LinkedIn after reading and admiring a few of his articles. Previously working for The Globe and Mail, he was appointed the 2009 editor and chief, with this being said, John is a highly accomplished journalist.

During the interview Darian asked some questions to get to know John beyond his writing. It can be concluded that John is a dark chocolate loving, dog admiring, Peloton addict with a passion for traveling. When asked what he would be doing if he was not working at RBC, John explained he would be writing books.

John Stackhouse is a talented writer that not only writes captivating articles, but also writes novels on a variety of different topics. His most current book he wrote is called “Planet Canada.” He explains it is about what he likes to refer to as “Canada’s eleventh province,” which is the ex-patriot population. These are Canadians that are living elsewhere in the world and doing amazing things in all walks of life. He believes Canada as a country is not using these people as strategic assets. The core argument in the book is that you are just as much a Canadian whether you have stayed here or moved abroad and still contribute positively to the Country.

When speaking about writing, John noted that in a state of crisis such as the pandemic, time is of the essence. The more complex the crisis, the simpler people want their information. Take into consideration what is known and how it is known to be true. Sometimes information is incomplete and incorrect. A fear of John’s is when releasing an article nearly all the information can be true, however one small incorrect piece of information can ruin a writer’s credibility.

Something greatly discussed by John was the significance of technology. It is responsible for many human advancements and improves the way we communicate. After the Global financial Crisis, the technology industry flourished. With this being said, the iPhone was released, Facebook grew in popularity and a new sector of jobs began being demanded which was referred to in the interview as the “new collar economy.”

John Stackhouse is a hard-working writer with many different passions. He is interested in political, technological and economical topics. His writing is educational, but also contains personal opinions and ideas. This interview was not only informational, but also conversational and allowed listeners to get to know John’s personality. RBC is very fortunate to have John Stackhouse be a part of their team.
