On this episode of Marketing News Canada, Darian Kovacs interviews Katherine Singh, a writer for Canadian publication, Flare Magazine. Whether it be fashion, beauty, politics or health, Flare has just the article you are looking for. The publication is targeted towards women, but still simultaneously speaks to everyone. With topics such as lifestyle and pop culture their target audiences are Millennials and Gen Z.
Singh studied journalism at the University of Queens where in her last year decided to apply for her masters. She then received her master’s from the University of Ryerson. Something that stood out to her about this experience was the fact that many of her professors were still working journalists during the time of teaching. She found this to be inspiring and fueled her creativity and passion for writing.
Similar to most these days, Singh also finds herself spending a lot of time on social media and the internet. Even with monitoring her screen time she still finds herself overusing apps such as Tiktok. Some of her favourite apps include Instagram, Twitter, Heat Run, and Voice notes for interviews. When not spending countless hours on the internet, Singh enjoys reading and participates in a book club.
On the daily, Katherine Singh receives an overwhelming number of emails of pitches to be featured in the Flare publication, some pitches being more effective than others. To have an effective pitch there are some significant points to consider. First being, how relevant is this topic to Flare? If it’s about dogs, it simply might not make the cut.
Pitches should be clear, concise and contain only the most relevant information. Out with the old and in with the new. If a pitch has something new and exciting to offer Flare, it will stand out amongst the crowd. Before submitting to Singh, she suggests that pitches contain research to make them credible and useful.
When it comes to the future of journalism, Katherine Singh sees an increase in the spread of newsletters. She mentioned a newsletter that she very much enjoys called “Friday Things” that discusses pop culture and current events. Directed towards Gen Zers, it is witty, fun and a light easy read.
During the interview Singh discusses the other publications that Flare is connected to. They include Toronto Life and Maclean’s. Being connected to other publications is useful because it allows for the sharing of information and the ability to share and repurpose each other’s content.
One of her favourite articles she has written throughout her career happens to be a recent one. She interviewed Nicole Kidman about a new upcoming show she is in. Singh states this is one of the most known celebrities she has interviewed to date. This interview was special because it discussed some of her favourite topics including diversity and seamlessly melts together everything she loves about journalism.
Katherine Singh is a fun and easy to listen speaker with advanced writing skills that make her a valuable asset to the Flare team and an exciting Marketing News Canada guest.
