On this episode of Marketing News Canada, Daryl Louie interviews Joe Glover, the Founder of The Marketing Meetup.
Joe used to be the individual that was too afraid to speak at networking events, and even when he did he did not feel valued and he believed that all people cared about was his job title rather than his humanity. Through his hard work and dedication, he has built a global community of over 25,000 amazing marketers.
The Marketing Meetup is a place for marketers around the world to come together to listen, learn, meet and share knowledge. Founded in 2016, the Meetup features two talks with actionable insights and now has a massive community across the globe.
When it comes to reflecting on the past year, going into COVID times, Joe thought the people he helped were marketing managers of small firms, however this is no longer the case. With the community he has built, he has been able to reach people in all stages of their marketing careers.
The demographic of people that The Marketing Meetup used to try and target was marketing managers with small budgets. It is now anyone with the need and desire to learn new information. When sending out newsletters, they used to send different ones to different audiences, but now they send it to their whole database as they believe the information to be relevant to everyone.
“Authenticity is such a lovely concept and it is spoken about a lot,” says Joe. In marketing, it is so easy to forget the meaning of being authentic, says Joe. He believes that people become so caught up in what they think they should be doing, that they forget about their own wants. An example of this is being active on LinkedIn. So many people believe that they need to be posting at least five times a week on their LinkedIn, but Joe believes there is no point in posting for the sake of posting. You should only be sharing content on social media that is authentic to you and what you believe.
Inspiration can come from anywhere, believes Joe. He believes it is most effective to write when you feel inspired. He said he feels most inspired between the hours of eight and nine in the morning. This is also an effective time to post on social media as many people are on their phones and your post has a greater chance at being seen by a larger audience. When asked a round of rapid fire questions, Joe answered as follows:
A marketing book you’d recommend?
Watertight Marketing by Bryony Thomas
A podcast you’d recommend?
Joe enjoys learning and sharing his knowledge with others, this characteristic makes him the perfect person to be the founder of The Marketing Meetup.
