The Importance of Indigenous Participation in Media and Advertising

Written By: Jordan Baptiste, Managing Director, Creative Fire

Creative Fire is an Indigenous-owned full-service agency and consulting firm and a member of Des Nedhe Group, the economic development arm of English River First Nation. As such, Indigenous participation across all sectors in Canada is something that we have always supported in our work. Our recently announced partnership with GroupM Canada, WPP’s media investment group, was born out of many conversations about the importance of Indigenous participation specifically in media and advertising to advance reconciliation and create opportunities for Indigenous Peoples and businesses.

Media and advertising play such a key role in shaping how Canadians think and make decisions. Yet, the industry lacks Indigenous representation, which has resulted in stories and approaches that often exclude or misrepresent Indigenous voices. We want to change that through our partnership with GroupM.

Representing Indigenous perspectives in media and advertising is an opportunity to challenge stereotypes and add a more in-depth understanding of Indigenous cultures, histories and current day realities to the content Canadians consume every day.

Our partnership will also focus on research and thought leadership into the priorities and preferences of Indigenous consumers. This will help clients better understand Indigenous audiences, open up new markets and support more inclusive advertising.

Lastly, through our partnership we can make sure that advertising projects are informed by Indigenous perspectives throughout the planning and creative process, not as an afterthought. That is an important part of creating content that is genuine and resonates with Indigenous people, and it also will lead to more compelling campaigns with fresh ideas and innovative approaches.

To create lasting change in the industry, we need to build capacity. We will tap into GroupM’s Launch Pad program to provide training, mentorship and opportunities for Indigenous talent, and build a pipeline of skilled professionals who can bring unique perspectives and creativity to the industry.

As we start this partnership with GroupM, we really see the power media and advertising have to shape society. By including and uplifting Indigenous voices, we can play a part in addressing historical injustices, promoting equity and creating more meaningful, respectful and effective advertising that truly reflects the diversity of Canada.
