The Globe Expands Cannes Lions Festival Coverage & Celebrations

The Globe and Mail, Canada’s official representative for the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, is excited to expand its festival coverage and celebrations domestically this year, including increased daily coverage and hosting a Toast to Cannes kick-off party in downtown Toronto on Monday, June 20, 2022, the same day the festival officially begins in Cannes, France.

When Cannes Lions announced a hybrid event in November 2021, The Globe reached out to the Canadian creative community to get a pulse on their festival plans.  “We found that a smaller number of the Canadian community would be travelling to Cannes this year,” says Andrew Saunders, Chief Revenue Officer at The Globe and President of the Cannes Advisory Board.  “But we also heard that there was a strong desire by the community for events and functions at home that would continue to benefit the industry. This is why we’re hosting our much loved Canada Beach Party in Toronto this year.”

On May 16, The Globe hosted a virtual training and networking session with the Canadian industry leaders who were selected to be part of the prestigious Cannes Lions Awarding Jury in preparation of meeting their global peers who will be judging the Cannes Lions. Five Canadians will serve as Cannes Lions Shortlist Jurors, judging remotely with the use of unique judging technology, while the other eight Cannes Lions Awarding Jurors will travel to Cannes to review and award the winning work of 2022.

Canadian festivities officially kick off today, May 25, with a jury party at Lodge on Queen in downtown Toronto, where The Globe will host the 2022 Cannes Lions Awarding and Shortlist jurors, the 2022 Canadian Young Lions jurors and Young Lions medal winners along with industry leaders from the creative and marketing community.

“This year’s celebrations will look different,” continued Andrew Saunders, “however, given the unique circumstances of 2022, our presence and coverage in Cannes and in Canada will allow those who decided against traveling this year to still benefit from networking with their peers in Canada and continue to benefit from the creative insights and perspectives that the festival delivers every year.”

In our expanded coverage, The Globe is supporting strategy’s creativity roundtable program on June 13, an intimate conversation with creative leaders discussing Canadian creativity and the work they expect to do well this year on the global stage. Full coverage will then continue throughout festival week, with Katherine Scarrow, General Manager, Globe Content Studio, heading up daily round-ups of all the highlights of Cannes programming.

In Cannes and representing The Globe again this year, is Karen Howe, President of The Township Group and a Cannes Lions Advisory Board Member. She will fully immerse herself in the live programming and networking events and will be the key point of contact for Canada’s 2022 Young Lion Gold award winners attending the festival.  Karen, a globally awarded Creative Director, will also be contributing her perspective to our daily festival coverage.

“As a former Cannes Lions Judge and an authority on the hottest trends in creativity, we are excited to have Karen continue to represent us in Cannes” continued Andrew Saunders. “As always, we look forward to Karen providing us with fresh insights and perspectives of what’s happening in Cannes for the Canadian community plus highlights of notable creativity from around the world.”

Also in Cannes representing The Globe will be Sonia Carreno, President of IAB Canada and a Cannes Lions Advisory Board Member. “Sonia’s reputation as an advertising and digital marketing specialist throughout the advertising community is well known and respected,” says Andrew Saunders, “and her unique perspective on the festival’s innovation and digital influence will be invaluable for the creative community here at home.”
