The Gathering Festival is not about Brands, it’s about Belonging

That’s a wrap for the 12th Gathering Festival.

As I look back on the past few days, I was going to write about the highlights and what I learnt, but I won’t. I’m not going to tell you that advertising in gaming is full of opportunity. I’m not going to tell you that their Golden Hour experience for creators was fun and that I met many like-minded people. I’m not going to tell you that Positivity IS the competitive advantage. And I’m definitely not going to tell you that sometimes the strongest brand strategy is realizing the truth is in the roots.

Instead, I want to share something more personal.

Let’s Rewind to 2023

It was almost exactly a year after losing both my dad and grandfather in the same weekend. A month before the conference, we lost another family member to suicide. Business was unstable, finances were tight, and our culture was struggling. My marriage was suffering, and my kids were too young to understand grief in that way.

I never truly stopped to recognize what all that loss had done to me.

At the time, my agency was working with The Gathering, and we had passes to attend. I saw it as an opportunity to escape from the day-to-day and maybe find inspiration again. Honestly, I don’t remember much from that year except one talk that felt like it was meant for me.

It was by Matt O’Neil from Legends Global. I didn’t know him then and went in completely blind. If it wasn’t for my notes, I would’ve forgotten his talk was about Inspiration and that inspiring customers should be the goal. What I actually remembered was him speaking about mental health and how he overcame his own dark times by starting a blog series about an urban samurai, an avatar for himself and what he was going through. Many others who were also struggling followed that journey, and because of it, he found healing through a new community that formed around those stories.

After the session, I reached out to thank him. He replied the next day, gave me his number, and said if I ever needed someone to talk to, he was there. That kind of generosity stuck with me.

What We Carry Together

The following year, in 2024, I planned to return. To my surprise, Matt reached out again to check in on me to see how I was doing. I promised I’d buy him a drink or two or three. Unfortunately, we did not cross paths.

That year, Ryan Gill shared his story of loss, his dad and close friends, and Laura Nestler from Reddit shared a story of her personal loss on stage as well. Listening to them, I felt their pain as if it were my own. When we share our truth, it becomes lighter because others carry a piece of it with us.

So why am I telling you this when it might sound unrelated to brand or marketing? Because behind every big campaign and every award, there are people. Real people who carry both wins and wounds. To me, that’s what The Gathering Festival is truly about. It’s not about brands on stage. It’s about the people behind them and the stories that connect us.

We live in a world where we curate perfect versions of ourselves online, but the bad and the broken are just as important. That’s what makes us human.

My old partner used to say, “No one ever dies from advertising and marketing.” Maybe not directly. But we all experience loss and pain because we’re human. Some say we shouldn’t bring that into work, but if we want to be authentic, we need to make space for both. To celebrate wins and to carry pain together.

A Reminder of Why We Gather

This year’s theme was “Winning the Future Together.”

The key word is Together. I came with nothing but curiosity and left with belonging. Every conversation with a stranger was enlightening and uplifting. The Gathering Festival is an incubator for connection, filled with creative, generous, and caring people who remind us why we do what we do.

Here are my real takeaways:

  • Ryan reminded us not to attend expecting to land a deal, but to ask what we can give today because someone needs it now.

  • Be generous with your time.

  • Jon Gordon spoke about having one word to guide your year. Mine is Gratitude.

  • And as IN-Q said, “I don’t want F-you money. I want thank-you money. I want I-love-you money.”

Closing Thought

Before I wrap up, I want to mention one more thing. This year, I met the founders of Day1Dads for the first time. Their mission is to support dads, moms, and caregivers with access to mental health resources and community support. During the festival, they gave away thousands of dollars worth of counselling and resources to help families who are struggling.

It was one of the most meaningful activations I’ve seen at The Gathering Festival. In a space where we often talk about brands, growth, and success, they reminded me that none of that matters without the people behind it. What they’re doing is important, and I wish I had known about them sooner.

If you know someone who’s carrying a heavy load, tell them about Day1Dads. Sometimes what we need most isn’t advice or solutions, but simply to know we’re not alone.

Looking back, I think about how much can change in three years. Back then, I was just trying to keep it together. Now, seeing something like Day1Dads being part of this space reminds me how important it is that we keep showing up for one another. That’s what belonging really looks like.
