Reddit is Expanding into the Canadian Market

Reddit, the communication platform for any topic you could imagine that boasts 52 million daily active users, recently announced their decision to begin business here in Canada. Their new office is being set up in Toronto and their goals are to connect with the best local entities in the area to create a continued sense of community. They will be working with local representatives in order to adapt the platform for the needs of advertisers as well as hiring management, sales, community and engineering teams to assist in their projected growth.

“Reddit’s mission is to bring community and belonging to everyone in the world. Our expansion to Canada -- home to our third largest user base -- marks an important and extremely exciting next step towards this goal,” said Reddit Head of Creative Strategy, Will Cady.

Reddit’s Chief Operating Officer, Jen Wong, mentions that the Canadian audience has already been very connected as has had a continuous growth rate. Reddit’s recent announcement notes their Canadian audience has been noticeably connected from shared interests opposed to demographics, which could be a key detail for advertisers when connecting to their desired audience.

In their transition to the Canadian market, Reddit plans to hire Canadian management to execute their business strategies, which will make for a better understanding of their Canadian target market. Will Cady mentions, “local nuance and understanding is so important to building out our Canadian users and communities, and to scaling our advertising business to service more local brands and advertisers. We are excited to grow our dedicated team in Canada with additional Sales and Consumer Product talent, which includes engineering and community management, in the coming months.”

What This Means For Marketing in Canada

The expansion of Reddit into Canada offers changes in the Canadian marketing landscape as well as new opportunities for Canadian advertisers. Reddit hosts advertising and sponsored posts which will be promoting more Canadian advertisers, as they mentioned in their announcement. As a marketer, you will be able to access the well established resources of Reddit in order to better share your voice and connect with their existing, engaged audiences.

This also brings new job opportunities for Canadian marketers as Reddit plans to hire for a number of roles. This development should hopefully be a beneficial change to the Canadian marketing environment.
